The Dice Tray ... Never leave home without it ...

Twilight Imperium - Shaterred Empire Expansion ... Almost ...

So, we played a four player game on Sunday, it took about 9 hours.  It was by far the longest game I had played in a while and it went really well.  I got refreshed on some of the rules I had forgotten and I now have what it takes to get some basic strategies going.  I have to say right off the bat the I almost won I was at 9 victory points and the Brotherhood of Yin  (well done) came and took my Home World and ripped me to shreds!  To prevent me from scoring the last point.  I was so disappointed :(  Took everything I had in one round with some good action cards and the Warfare II card (High Alert +1).  OUCH!

The Mines are pretty cool even though I didn't use them.  But the Winnu (my bro) did.  And it did stop a few attacks.  But in the end they are only gonna be a waste of time if you are gonna just put them everywhere.  In your home world maybe, but otherwise ...  I guess they are good defense but not that great.  I don't think you can rely on them for anything but a lucky little boost if they hit when they go off.

The Shock Troops are pretty cool.  When you invade and you hit a 10 on a dice, one Ground Troop becomes a ST.  Hitting at 5 instead of of 8 until you lose it by having it without a Ground Troop.  That is pretty good if you ask me!  Unfortunately, I did not score any.  But the Yin did, and they did score a few hits extra at one point.  I guess this unit would be cool with the Federation of Sol.  Since they are all about the ground force.

So I played the Embers of Muaat  You start the game with a War Sun.  Including the Technology for it.  It can only move 1 until you have the Hylar V and the Deep Space Cannon, then they move for 2.  You can also use an action to create a Destroyer or 2 fighters at Space Docks and War Suns (for a Strategy Token).  I did this allot.  Every time I would have room in my fleet I would make sure to pump out Destroyers.  I was able to get my second War Sun out quick after getting the Trade Turn twice in 3 turns.  Got the second Sun ... and there was much rejoicing!  And much fear from the other players.  They instantly started going after me to kill one of the Suns.  I was feared.  AND accumulating points!

In the end though, I got plowed after I lost both War Suns. Which all told, are just big, fat, expensive tanks that can take allot of hits.  Because against 3 Dreads and a few Cruisers, they are toast.  You gotta use it as defense I think.   I did manage to stay alive until I could get 9 points, by the time I got to 7 or 8 points, the others realized that letting me have the Bureaucracy Card every turn, is BAD news since it allowed me the possibility to score 2 victory points per turn.
It was a good game.  It is the type of game that you have to play allot to really get good at because of its complexity and dept.  Anyway.  More to come.  I will be posting about Talisman: 4th Edition cuz it is one of my favorites.

Regards all!

The International Language of Games ...

Even though I don't understand Italian too much, I still know what this guy is talking about and I have a goo idea why they keep cracking up.  "Fine, I give it up!" lol.  This guy really does not want to let go of the station.  Twilight Imperium is a HARD game to learn.  But ...  Do not dispair my Italian friends ... once you get the basics and remember them (note to self) then you are gonna go BuckWild with this one.

GAME ON!

Twilight Imperium! Shattered Empire Expansion ... all told ... pretty good.

When I first started playing this game, before the expansion, I thought it was long, cumbersome and slow.  It takes for ever to set the board and the set-up was unbelievably difficult to understand.  But after 3 games ... I realized that it was a really great game.  For some reason, it reminds me of the old Wing Commander Computer Game and that only makes it more kick ass.  Given that the board is always different it makes it really cool for me also.  It is full of different tactics and strategies that you can use to win.  Because this is not really a crush, kill and destroy kinda turn based Strategy game, you can win without really fighting other players that much.  You can sit back and watch the others pommel each other while you just TECH UP and get the Victory Points that way!  Concentrate on guarding your Home Planet.  I once made the mistake of neglecting it and it cost me ... dearly.

So since this is my first post I guest I should solicit advise about what kinda rating system I should use ... like stars ... 1 to 5 kinda of thing ... Anyway.  For now I guess I'll just talk about the expansion.  Shattered Empire.  The storyline in this game is complex and layered.  But kinda secondary to the overall game.  You just have to get a good grip of the advantages of your Race and make sure not to forget to apply them whenever you can.

Now the guys I was playing with are way better than I am and they had played more that I had.  So it was good for me that they fought all game and I did not have to fight them at all.  I tried to get the planets around my home world first but I got stopped by the Domain tokens (Biohazard and Hostages).  The real war was Black ( Winnu) and Grey (Saar).  The new Strategy cards are interesting.  Like all the aspects of the game, the ones you pick end up always balancing out.  This is why this game is so good.  No matter how you play it, everything seams to be even.  Some exceptions maybe... but overall.  (one star for that i guess).

The Battle begins ...

I don't wanna get into this thing where I describe every single ability of each and every new Strat. Card or Race Ability so I will just talk about the stuff that stuck out overall.  The new races are cool.  One of them, Embers of Muaat, start with a War Sun right of the bat.  When you get the Deep Space Cannon TECH - the War Sun moves 2 AND you can spend Command Tokens to spit out fighters or Destroyer!  I think next game I will play this species!

The warfare card II was really good.  You get a High Alert Bonus.  +1 Combat and +1 movement until the end of the Status Phase.  It allow the other players to get a to use command tokens to move to adjacent systems without using commands.    Sorry about the blurry pics.  The camera i have is old and raggedy.

So.  All in all The expansion is good.  It fits well with the game and it gives the option of using all or some of the new cards which makes it a good add-on and worthy of the original.  I will update when I have played a little more.

In the meantime GAME ON!

CATAN 'nuff said ...

Well. Talking about Catan is a long, long ... long conversation.  So I have decided to post many, many ... many times about this game.  Given that it is the most sold game at the moment (atleast where I live) I hope to get some good feedback from all them gamers out there.  I have played this game so much and I still have not tried all the add-ons.  The only one I have not really tried all that much is the Traders and Barbarians.  Specifically the Caravans.  But the Seafearers and CK I have played alot.  This is the last game I played a few days ago.  3 players, and I got royally destroyed!  'nuff said.

The board.  We tried spreading out the ports out evenly and have 3 islands.

Why do people hate me!

THE BARBARIANS ARE COMING!  Head for the HILLS!!

So it begins ...

Hey All!

I would like to welcome you to this Blog. If would like to begin by humbly asking for your for your help.   I am kinda new to blogging, so please forgive any errors or missteps that might occur while I write these posts.  Your patience is much appreciated.  Please feel free to contact me if I, in any way, post anything offensive to you.  I promise to do my best to respect the etiquette that I must confess, I am still learning about.

I have been playing games my whole life, like almost 90% of people.  Games are an important part of societies.  As an armchair historian, I can tell you that throughout history games form an important part of a societies development.  Games were used throughout history for fun, sport, profit, exercise, even justice in some cultures.  When looking at a society in a historical context, the games that it plays are real mirrors into the interests, wants and needs of the people that lived in that time.  For example, the importance of Poker and Faro to the development of the western plains of North America.  Throughout the 19th century in the Midwest these games were almost necessary for the economy in little towns. I my view, games represent a good way for people who like history to put themselves in the shoes of those that came before.  Games were used in South America to determine who would be sacrificed to the Sun God so that the sun would rise the next morning.  Playing a variation of basketball, with a human skull, with the intent to volley said skull through a stone hoop suspended a few feet from the ground using your hips to hit the skull.  Players would duel in teams against each other until the loosing team was sacrificed at the top of the pyramid the next day.  (Glad I was not there.  Cuz my guts would have been the first spilled. lol)

As for me, I have been gaming for a long while ( age does not matter right?) Mostly, boardgames, CCG, RPG's and of course video games.  Poker is also a game that I have an interest in.  However, playing it in Casinos is not really my cup of tea, playing with friends and colleagues is what i like.  BUT I welcome all posts about poker, I learned how to play in Casinos a while ago and I was a big fan of Omaha and Hold'em.  So strategies, betting cycles stuff like that would be welcome advice.  I have decided to start this Blog about gaming because I want to solicit feedback from people and get ideas for better games to buy and preview.  I have a small digital camera that I will use to chronicle my gaming.  I will also try and show the quality (or lack thereof) of the game pieces and graphics. That way I can contribute to the discussion and pictures that I can show to compare and stuff of the like.  Comments about the quality of games and the cards, tokens, board and dice schemes etc ... will be most welcome.

So I finish this post by quoting  ... Grantland Rice
"For when the One Great Scorer comes
To write against your name,
He marks - not that you won or lost -
But how you played the Game."
(from the poem "Alumnus Football")
